We are delighted to announce that there will be a smaller From the Earth exhibition at the Upstairs Gallery in Berkhamstead, Herts in July this year. A call for artists has now been released and details can be found if you click on the link below. Application is open to all in the UK and those artists who participated in the exhibition last year can either submit new work or they are welcome to submit the work from the previous exhibition. Queries can either be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
Just to let everyone know that the exhibition will now close at the end of Saturday 25th June. We had anticipated that it would go on a little longer but due to the gallery changing ownership it is not practicable to close any later than this date. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. The exhibition at ArtVanGo will however go on until the 30th as planned.
After much huffing and puffing and some tweaks here and there. The exhibition is now open! We are astounded by the quality of the work we have received, some of it much much nicer than in the images sent to us by the artists. I think that there is a lesson there for all of us about how we present our work, although in fairness I truly believe that naturally treated/dyed textiles are much more difficult to satisfactorily photograph than other media even by professional photographers.
For this reason I am not posting any pictures until we have seen what the professional photographer has come up with. A few nice ones that we have taken have been posted on Facebook.
Update on the workshops. We should have posted this a while back. Sadly we have had to cancel Sarah Waters Black and White felt workshop. However there are a couple of her beautiful pieces on display at our sister exhibition at ArtVanGo. There are still a couple of places on Jennys indigo and flour paste resist workshop and spaces in Fabiennes ‘Pods of Tenderness’. More details on the Workshops page.
The sister From the Earth Tutors exhibition at ArtVanGo will open on Saturday the 4th June. On that day they are also having their annual Summer Gathering where a number of practising textile artists will be present demonstrating their particular techniques ( not necessarily natural!) with opportunities to chat to them about what they do and possibly even have a go. I have heard there is also cake involved. So well worth checking out.
Definitive pics of the exhibition will be along in due course
It is now only a few days until we hang ‘From the Earth’. We have started to receive lots of lovely packages from around the UK and some from overseas. I am not sure whether we have announced this but not only will we be hanging the main exhibition but also a subsidiary tutors exhibition in the gallery at ArtVanGo which will include work from all those involved in the workshops that are running there in June. Even better reason to visit Hertfordshire in June.
In the meantime we will leave you with an image of Alice Foxes lovely Oakleaf Quilt which can be seen in the main exhibition.
It seems like time has flown and in no time at all June will be here – we are getting very excited!
The workshops have been slowly and not so slowly filling up. Fabiennes eco printing workshop has been full for some time but there may be a space becoming available so if you are at all interested then please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
There are still a couple of spaces on Jennys Organic Indigo Vat workshop
Here you will learn all about how to make, maintain and troubleshoot an organic indigo vat and then experiment with various techniques including flour paste resist which offers the potential for some wonderful effects. Again if at all interested contact us at email@example.com. Cost for the 2 days is £95
We are aware that our deadline for submissions to the From the Earth exhibition is getting closer. We have had a lot of lovely work come to us already but we would like to see more! We would especially like to see some more 3D pieces as we have available to us some cabinets and some plinths. Above is a picture of part of the gallery. Please note that it will not be pink come the exhibition also not as cluttered. I am not sure whether it has been mentioned before but there will also be an opportunity to sell smaller items such as cards, scarves etc alongside the work.
We would like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas! We hope that lots of you are working hard on their submissions for the exhibition, January 31st is now only just around the corner.
A quick word regarding workshops, we have had a flurry of signings recently as they have been advertised alongside the regular ArtVanGO workshop programme which was released this week. If you are at all interested in any of the classes we suggest you get in there quick. There are still several places left for Sarah Waters’ Black and White class which is strongly recommended. Here is a beautiful and quite seasonal images of her work which was on display at Romsey Abbey earlier on this year.
Fabiennes workshop Eco Print and Memory Cloth is now full. We shall be operating a waiting list. There are still places on the one day class Pods of Tenderness. This is a fabulous opportunity to spend a day stitching with Fabienne.
Interest has been brisk on several of the other workshops, we would urge anyone considering taking a place to do so sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.
We are pleased to announce that workshops can now be booked for next June. Please go to our workshops page for full details. A word of warning, we have received a very high level of interest for Fabienne Dorsmann Reys eco printing workshop. If you are interested in participating in this class we strongly advise you to act promptly in order to avoid disappointment.
This is a bit of a heads up to say that we anticipate that the workshops will be open for registration within the next couple of days. its a case of watch this space while we cross the is and dot the ts.
